Adirondack Wild Attractions

Museums, Great Camps, and Scenic Rides

In Hamilton County, our biggest attraction is the Adirondack Wild – a vast, pristine playground of balsam forests, mountain peaks and deep lakes offering unparalleled outdoor recreation.

Museum and Arts in the Adirondacks

Hamilton County is the center of the natural and social history in the region - and home to some of the most celebrated and unique attractions in the Adirondacks. Each year, thousands of visitors travel to the heart of the Adirondack Park to revisit the past at the Adirondack Museum. Known as the “Smithsonian of the Adirondacks,” the museum’s extensive campus is the hallowed repository of our most cherished stories, offering exhibits, interactive displays, events and workshops.

Nearby, the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts carries on the creative legacy of the Adirondacks’ artisan craftsmanship and performing arts. The center offers an array of events, workshops and theater. Watch Shakespeare, re-imagined and performed outdoors, or take a workshop on filmmaking or oil painting.

Great Camps in Hamilton County

Discover more of the Adirondack Wild’s Great Camps along the shores of Raquette Lake. Explore the lake in style aboard the W. W. Durant Cruise Ship and enjoy a dinner cruise complete with evening entertainment against the spectacular colors of an Adirondack sunset.

Another one of the region’s unique Adirondack attractions is Great Camp Sagamore, a former Vanderbilt Great Camp, and now a National Historic Landmark.  Sagamore offers overnight accommodations in storied Adirondack Great Camp luxury. Tours of the buildings and grounds, as well as special events are open to the general public throughout the year.

Scenic Drives and Rides

In a region where stoplights are non-existent, New York scenic drives offer visitors the chance to experience the region’s stunning landscape and wildlife. Each season adds a beautiful patina to the wild forests and glittering lakes. Enjoy the region’s unique attractions, quaint shops and charming villages. Don’t miss a stop at Hoss’s Country Corner Store in Long Lake to stock up on everything you need to for a wilderness retreat into the Adirondack Wild.

For a truly unrivaled experience, Adirondack Saddle Tours offers overnight horseback riding excursions for families and couples. If you enjoy campfire stories, s‘mores and star-gazing, Hamilton County campsites outnumber hotel rooms 4:1 – making this the best place to experience camping in the Adirondacks.

Float Plane Rides

Hamilton County is one of the only places in the Adirondack Park offering scenic float plane rides. Charter a flight and experience the Adirondack Wild from a birds’-eye-view, or fly into the wilderness for a backcountry camping or fishing trip. Be sure to check out our events and take part in all that Hamilton County has to offer!
