The Adirondack Museum

There is no attraction that offers a greater concentration of the history and spirit of the Adirondacks than The Adirondack Museum.  Called the Smithsonian of the Adirondacks  the museum is one of many Adirondack attractions that showcase all the rich history that made -- and still make -- the Adirondacks unique.

Adirondack History Comes Alive
The history of the region is explored and displayed in glorious detail. The Adirondack Museum's campus of historic buildings and exhibit halls showcase the rough and tumble lives of Adirondack loggers and the doggedness of miners of the region. You'll learn about the "cure" for tuberculosis and the industry it created, the heroism of 19th century women and the wit and woodscraft of Adirondack Guides (featuring authentic guide boats). You'll marvel at the lavishly appointed private train car of the Vanderbilts and the beauty of the hand-built dogsleds and strip-built canoes. The Log Hotel is in the National Register of Historic Places. The Adirondack Museum also has a research library and has published over 60 books the history of the region.

Art and Culture
The museum is also a center for the painting, photography and architecture inspired by the region. The works on permanent and rotating display include photographs by Seneca Ray Stoddard, Alfred Stieglitz, and Eliot Porter, as well as paintings by Audubon and A.F. Tait. The Adirondack Museum houses the largest public collection of rustic furniture, an important collection of inland wooden watercraft and many fine log cabin and great camp architectural photos and designs.

Activities and Events
Whether you're in the one-room schoolhouse, the complete blacksmith shop, or making a canoe paddle with a hatchet -- you'll be transported back in time with on-going active presentations and workshops demonstrating the essential skills and craftsmanship from the 19th century.. There are numerous hands-on activities and attractions that are kid-friendly and fun.
