The Lake
One of the crown jewels of the Adirondacks is Raquette Lake -- 100 miles of picturesque pine-covered shoreline that is one of the major Adirondack attractions for hikers, campers, boating enthusiasts and lovers of history and architecture.
Raquette Lake is located in Hamilton County and is the source water for the Raquette River -- a 150 mile long river that exists entirely in New York State. In the winter, heavy snowfall makes Raquette Lake and the surrounding areas highly suited to snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and snowshoeing ('raquette' is French for 'snowshoe').
Raquette Lake is known as the
birthplace of Adirondack Great Camp architecture. Camps were constructed in the
19th Century by famous gilded age industrialists, such as the Carnegies
and Vanderbilt's. These homes were constructed from local timber, utilizing native
stonework, adorned with branches and twigs as decorative and ornamental
elements. In the summer, you can tour Raquette Lake and catch glimpses of
these camps aboard the W.W. Durant. On the tour you will learn more about the
historic camps while enjoying a lunch, dinner, or brunch!
