Great Camps, Great Museum, Great Times

The Adirondack Museum has been called the Smithsonian of the Adirondacks. From a primitive 19th century "hotel" to the opulent private train car of the Vanderbilts, the museum is a showcase of all the things that made -- and still make -- the Adirondacks unique.

Raquette Lake is the home of Great Camp architecture, palatial rustic structures that are now copied in resorts around the globe. See it here first at Great Camp Sagamore, designed by W.W. Durant.

Don't forget shopping. There are no chain stores, only owner-operated shops. Look for artisan crafts, including Adirondack rustic furniture. Sometimes a small roadside sign is the only indication of one-of-a-kind works of art.
