Fall Events Not to be Missed this year

One Square Mile of Hope

On September 13, 2014, One Square Mile of Hope will attempt to take back its title and set a new Guinness world record for the Largest Raft of canoes and kayaks, while raising funds for breast cancer research and awareness. This year the Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks joined One Square Mile of Hope with the goal of recapturing the record.

The event will take place on Fourth Lake in Inlet, the location that first captured the title in 2011. That year, the record of 1902 boats was established by One Square Mile of Hope. The record was taken away in August 2013 with 2099 boats counted, by another group.

As of September 6th, 2816 boats (3277 people) have registered to for the event, and as of Monday morning the phones have not stopped ringing off the hook!

Spectator Information: The best place to watch the event unfold is at Arrowhead Park in the middle of Inlet. Since this is the center of action for the day's activities, the area will be extremely busy and parking will be scarce or non-existent. There are two satellite parking areas available for you to park and take a shuttle into town. The shuttle runs every 10 minutes.

  • The first is at Murdock Trucking on Limekiln Road just outside of Inlet, and is located next to the Ole Barn restaurant. Directions: Drive south on 28 towards Raquette Lake and make a right onto Limekiln Road. Go another 1.5 miles to arrive at Murdock Trucking.
  • The second parking area is at Fern Park, located off of South Shore Road. Directions: Drive approximately 1/10th mile south on 28 from the middle of town towards Raquette Lake and take a right onto South Shore Road. Look for Fern Park (Loomis Road) on the left in another 2/10th mile. Drive down Loomis Road to the parking lot and catch the shuttle there. Both parking spots are just minutes from Arrowhead Park in at the middle of the Town of Inlet.

THE MOOSE IS LOOSE!

The great Adirondack Moose Festival comes back to the Town of Indian Lake on September 27-28 for the 5th year running and looks to be more exciting, bigger and better than last year!

Did you know that the moose is the largest member of the deer (Cervidae) family? They weigh anywhere between 500 and 1200 pounds? And, the ideal moose habitat consists of a mosaic of upland mature mixed forest, open areas created by burns or logging, and wetlands? Although the center of Indian Lake is not the moose's preferred habitat, you'll learn more about the big guy, its life and maybe hear a moose call or two to boot!

The weekend festivities include a variety of events almost too numerous to list here, but we'll give you a few. Then take a look at the full festival schedule of events - click on the link below:

  • Moose River Plains self-guided tours – maybe you'll see one!
  • Mac the Moose, a full moose mount – hey, you might never see one in the wild...
