Family & Car Camping in the Adirondack Wild
Hamilton County car camping, also known as campground camping, is a fun, inexpensive vacation option. In contrast to backcountry camping where you carry everything into the great north woods on your back, car camping is a low-stress way to spend time with your family while exploring outdoor activities and local cultural attractions.
There are more than two dozen campgrounds in Hamilton County, most with waterfront sites and beaches. Indian Lake Island Campsites offer wish fulfillment if you have a boat or canoe – a vacation on your “own” island. Make reservations early in the year for these sites.
Top Car Campsites for Families:
Hideaway Campsite in Long Lake is located just off of Route 30, providing trailer and tent sites perfect for car camping. Enjoy a tucked-away feeling without straying too far from civilization. Nearby, the International Paper John Dillon Park is a campground designed exclusively for people with disabilities. Located on the shores of Grampus Lake, campers can explore three miles of universally accessible hiking trails and stop for a picnic lunch at one of eight specially designed Adirondack lean-tos. There are campsites threaded throughout the Moose River Plains Recreation Area. There are privies and fire circles. While there are no showers or amenities, there are no use fees, either. Large groups or stays longer three days require a permit from the local ranger.
Lake Durant State Campground in Blue Mountain Lake offers scenic, quiet campsites within two miles of the Adirondack Museum. Perfect for families with kids, the lake provides ample paddling and fishing opportunities.
Family-friendly Golden Beach State Campground is located on Raquette Lake. Like most of the 17 state campgrounds in the county, this popular campground offers amenities such as restrooms with showers, a trailer dump station, recycling center, sand beach, access to hiking trails and public picnic areas with tables and fireplaces.
