Lake Pleasant

Along the Perkins Clearing Road, listen for the rich chirry, chirry, chorry, chorry song of the Mourning Warblers emanating from the blackberry thickets. The trail should provide most of the Adirondack Wood Warblers, and the first high, thin zi-zi-zi-zi-zi-zi-zi-zi-zi of Blackpoll Warbler at a certain elevation will indicate that the 3,597-foot summit is really not that much farther ahead. Boreal Chickadee and Bicknell's Thrush are also found in this high-elevation zone. All of these birds are quite secretive at times and might only be heard and not seen. The best view of the West Canada Lake Wilderness Area can be seen from the top of the stairs to the tower.

Directions

To reach the trailhead, take the Perkins Clearing Road just north of Mason Lake on Route 30. Follow this dirt road to the first right turn marked by DEC signs. Those without fourwheel drive vehicles will have to park at Sled Harbor at the next intersection. The right fork leads to a rock barrier at about 0.5 mile. From this barrier, it's a two-mile hike to the summit of Pillsbury Mountain-a vertical rise of 1,677 feet. The fire tower trail is a left turn off the main trail to Cedar Lakes.
