Wells

Philadelphia Vireos have been seen feeding young in the second-growth hardwoods bordering the road from Blackbridge to Whitehouse. The Northville-Placid Trail to the south leads to Silver Lake, a distance of seven miles. At 2.5 miles there is a lean-to at Mud Lake. At five miles, the N-P Trail passes Canary Pond (where birders probably won't spot any canaries), and then two miles farther is Silver Lake. This is all in the Silver Lake Wilderness Area with a variety of conifers and hardwoods that harbor Woodpeckers, Flycatchers, Thrushes, and may even reward the hiker with a memorable view of a singing male Scarlet Tanager or Rosebreasted Grosbeak.

Directions

At the south end of Wells, cross the East Branch of the Sacandaga River below the Lake Algonquin Dam. Take the West River Road west to Whitehouse (site of an old hotel) and trailhead parking.
