For true wilderness fishing that exceeds expectations for beauty and the fight in the wild brook trout, the West Canada Lakes Wilderness is unrivaled.  The area has more than 50 remote ponds.  A circle of lakes includes Cedar and Spruce, which are touted as the best waters for brookies.  Even more remote are the pocket of ponds two miles southwest of Spruce Lake.

Directions

Make no mistake, this is the backcountry. A rough jeep road runs from Rt. 30 south of Lewey Lake or north of Sacandaga Lake. This continues through Perkins Clearing to Sled Harbor. From Sled Harbor parking area, it is a 5.5 mile hike to Cedar Lake. If you continue from Sled Harbor to the end of the jeep trail, it is a 3.5 mile hike from the parking area to Spruce Lake.
