Estelle Pond

Estelle Pond

This trail is obscure and not marked, but can be followed without too much trouble. GPS, map and compass, and navigation experience is highly recommended.

How to get there

From the intersection of Route 28 and Route 30 in Blue Mountain Lake follow Route 28 toward Raquette Lake. Locate the Golden Beach Campground on the right and drive about 0.2 miles past here and locate a gated forest road on the left, this is the access trail for Death (Secret) Falls.

Trail Description

Estelle Pond is not officially named as such, but this beaver pond being on the flanks of Estelle Mountain, just makes sense to be called such. From the trailhead follow the forest road through the grassy field and when it makes a hard left and starts uphill locate the path/old trail on the right. The old trail is believed to be an access road to the Great Camp Sagamore and used to transport supplies and patron the "backway" through the forest, to give them more of a wilderness feel, I bet it worked.

Once on the old trail it's pretty easy to follow aside from a couple small spots, but take your time and look ahead rather than right in front of you to stay on it. The trail climbs and on a couple occasion a few dead trees will be fallen over the trail, skirt them and get right back to the trail. The trail climbs a bit over 300' to the shore of the obscure pond. This resembles an old beaver pond with dead snags dotting it. The shore is easily reached and in the fall it is a nice scenic destination.
