A Quiet Night in Piseco

When we first arrived at the Irondequoit Inn, in Piseco, NY, we were in awe. Even though it was a rainy day, the view from the wrap around porch of Piseco Lake and the mountains in the background was gorgeous. Standing there, taking it all in, we knew that we would want to come back in the winter.

Mimi, one of the Innkeepers, greeted us with a smile on her face. She was more than happy to help two wet hikers get a room for the night. To our surprise, we were able to rent one of their cabins. They have 5 cabins on the property, and we were going to stay in cabin #1. We could see the cabin from the main house, and it was as picture perfect.

Mimi gave us a short tour of the Inn. The 8 bedrooms in the Inn are newly updated/renovated. From the snowshoes and paddles on the wall to the clean white quilts on the bed, the rooms were the perfect combination of rustic and modern. The rooms make for a great place to cozy up with a book or look out the window over the lake.

On the main floor of the Inn, there was a living area with a full bookshelf, comfortable couch and a fireplace. In the corner, there was a chair, music stand and instruments set up. Mimi went on to tell us that her husband, Dan, plays music for the guests when he can. He has been given the nickname “the Jukebox Man.” I can picture it now, relaxing by the fire with some live music after a full day of skiing at Oak Mountain then heading to the dining room for dinner reservations.

When we got to the cabin, the first thing that we noticed how clean and welcoming it was. It was a fully furnished, two bedroom cabin with a view of the lake. We immediately changed out of our wet clothes, I took a hot shower, then settled on to the couch to relax. Looking out the large windows at the lake, we talked about all the things we would do when we came back to visit. We love to ice fish, so that was definitely on the list.

Luckily for us, there was a break in the rain. We took the opportunity to explore the property. Right outside our cabin, there was a tennis court and a lean-to. Outside the lean-to there was a a stone grill which made this area the ideal place to have a barbecue with friends. Then we went down to check out the beach area. We passed the other cabins and some of the campsites they have on the property.

At the beach, ]watched the wildlife for a while and walked around to check out everything that was down there. They have a large fire pit right near the beach that they try to light once a week. Unfortunately, checking in on a Tuesday and the rain, we missed the chance to see it. We looked at the paddle boats they loan to their guests for a chance to explore Piseco Lake in the summertime. In the winter when the lake freezes, you can cross country ski/snowshoe across it. We made note to study a map of the lake when we got back.

Back at the cabin and exhausted from the day, we settle into bed. Pleasantly surprised with how comfortable the bed was, we laid there and reflected on the day with a smile on our faces. Knowing that we had to get up early the next day, we were bummed that we couldn’t stay until the check out time at 11am. We checked out at 6:30am and the rest of the day we talked about when we would be back and all of the winter activities on our “to-do list”.
