Adirondack Experience Waterfall Challenge

Spring in the Adirondacks means one thing. Waterfalls. When the snow melts, the runoff leads to rushing waterfalls, and we are lucky to have a bunch of them to be able to explore. Some are right off the side of the road, and others require a bit of a hike to get to, but each one provides beautiful and peaceful views. To get inspired for your next outdoor adventure, check out a few of our awesome waterfalls, then complete the whole waterfall challenge

Whiskey Brook Falls

Whiskey Brook Falls is an easily accessible waterfall on the eastern side of the road. From the intersection of Route 8 and Route 30 in Speculator, drive 2.2 miles north on Route 30 and look off to the right for the stream which flows under the road through a large culvert. Pull off to the right, park, and follow the southern bank of the creek upstream for 50 feet where you will see the falls. This is the perfect spot for a road side picnic, or a place to relax with a good book.

Cascade Falls

Cascade Falls is the perfect day outing. You can hike to the waterfall and back, or continue on and hike the whole loop. The entire loop is about 5.5 miles, while the out and back to the waterfall is about the same, as the waterfall is the halfway point. The 40-foot vertical waterfall is a wonder to see in itself. Combine that with a great hike and you have a perfect Adirondack day! Pack a lunch and enjoy your time in the wilderness. From Inlet, follow Route 28 toward Eagle Bay. Here, turn right onto Big Moose Road. Follow Big Moose Road for just about 1 mile to the large trailhead parking on the right.

Austin Falls

Austin Falls is located in the Town of Wells. This is a long sliding waterfall with beautiful rock formations on both sides. The river is calm above the falls, but as it narrows by the rock formations, there is an elevation drop, creating a beautiful waterfall show. At the bottom of the falls is a large rock that hurls water into the air creating a natural fountain. The falls only require about a 50 foot walk to the water, but be careful as the rocks can be slippery.

West Stony Creek Falls

Located in Benson, a visit to West Stony Creek Falls requires a mile and a half walk. West Stony Creek Falls is a smaller waterfall, but worth the trip. This is a perfect spot to bring the family for a picnic lunch, as it is a fairly level and easy walk into the falls. Once you arrive at the falls you will see it is a very picturesque and lots of fun area for the kids to play. Please be careful around the falls as rocks become slippery when wet.
